RESUMEN
El trauma es una importante causa de morbi-mortalidad. Para muchos pacientes, el primer viaje al servicio de urgencias es a través de un transporte médico. La primera evidencia de transporte de un paciente lesionado corresponde a los tiempos bíblicos, aunque la práctica de este procedimiento se refinó hasta la segunda mitad del siglo pasado. La historia del transporte pediátrico comenzó en los años 70 cuando se organizaron los equipos de transporte neonatal. Los programas de entrenamiento pediátrico en los Estados Unidos que disponen de servicio de transporte reportan 80 a 700 servicios efectuados anualmente. Es evidente que sólo un servicio especializado puede cubrir el espectro de las necesidades de los pacientes pediátricos traumatizados; los niños requieren cuidados proporcionados por profesionales expertos en el tratamiento del trauma. En este artículo se revisan las guías de manejo de los pacientes pediátricos críticos con trauma.
