RESUMEN
La ingestión de calcio tiene un papel en el desarrollo de la masa ósea pico y, en menor medida, en el mantenimiento de la
masa ósea en la vida adulta y en disminuir la tasa de pérdida ósea en la postmenopausia y en la edad avanzada en ambos
sexos. Debe preferirse la ingestión alimentaria de calcio al uso de suplementos. Los lácteos son la principal fuente de calcio
en la dieta. El efecto sobre prevención de fracturas no está claramente demostrado por estudios prospectivos debido a la
dificultad práctica para realizar estudios con el seguimiento suficiente para alcanzar conclusiones sólidas, pero existen
razones fisiológicas para pensar que una ingestión adecuada de calcio y concentraciones de 25(OH) vitamina D mayores
a 20 ng/ml tienen efectos benéficos en la salud ósea y podrían disminuir en cierta medida el riesgo de fracturas.
