Neumonía asociada a ventilación mecánica

RESUMEN
La neumonía asociada al ventilador (NAV) es la complicación infecciosa más frecuente en los pacientes críticamente enfermos que se encuentran intubados y ventilados mecánicamente. Esta entidad incrementa el tiempo de estancia y la mortalidad en terapia intensiva. En los últimos años, la información científica ha mejorado nuestro entendimiento de la patogénesis, diagnóstico y tratamiento de la NAV, a pesar de lo cual aún existe confusión en los criterios diagnósticos y en el manejo de estos pacientes.
En el Consenso Mexicano de Diagnóstico y Manejo de la Neumonía, realizado por 25 investigadores mexicanos, un subgrupo de 6 intensivistas elegidos por la mesa directiva de la Asociación Mexicana de Medicina Crítica y Terapia Intensiva, realizaron una revisión de la literatura más reciente en relación a la NAV para después llevar a cabo una discusión abierta, de la cual surgió un documento que describe la definición, epidemiología, diagnóstico y tratamiento de la NAV.
Se destacó en el consenso la importancia de la profilaxis y la vigilancia epidemiológica local.
