La apnea obstructiva del sueño es un factor de riesgo para la enfermedad vascular cerebral

RESUMEN
La apnea obstructiva del sueño es el trastorno respiratorio más frecuente en hombres que en mujeres. La hipoxia crónica intermitente resulta de esta patología, y la activación simpática con microdespertares, que tienen como finalidad restablecer el tono muscular de la vía aérea superior para restablecer la respiración, ocasionan alteraciones en la actividad cardiaca y variaciones fisiológicas importantes en la secreción endocrina de otros sistemas circadianos. Es fundamental la investigación de los factores de riesgo que permita incidir en la prevención no sólo de los factores de riesgo tradicionales como la hipertensión arterial sistémica, diabetes mellitus, hiperlipidemias, obesidad, tabaquismo, valvulopatía o cardiomiopatías, sino también de los nuevos factores de riesgo como el aumento de la homocisteína plasmática o procesos inflamatorios, la gingivitis crónica y, muy particularmente, los trastornos respiratorios del sueño como la apnea obstructiva del sueño, que frecuentemente son poco diagnosticados.
