Desde hace décadas se ha ido conociendo la complejidad de los mecanismos que generan la mezcla de contaminantes acumulados en las grandes ciudades y que incluye contaminantes primarios de vehículos e industrias; en general, productos de la combustión incompleta y de manera adicional polvos de diverso origen, en el Valle de México tradicionalmente las tolvaneras y contaminantes secundarios generados en la atmósfera por acción de los rayos ultravioleta como el ozono.
