Las infecciones de las vías respiratorias inferiores, incluida la neumonía adquirida en la comunidad (NAC), se encuentran dentro de las 10 principales causas de mortalidad a nivel mundial. Fueron responsables de poco más de 3 millones de muertes en el mundo en el año 2012. Los individuos más frecuentemente afectados son los niños menores de 5 años y los adultos de ≥ 45 años, aunque la incidencia se incrementa de manera significativa en personas de ≥ 60 años.
