Al escuchar por primera vez el término anestesia libre de opioides (OFA, por sus siglas en inglés), es casi inevitable que produzca desconcierto y que los involucrados en la especialidad se hagan preguntas como: « ¿Qué se usa?, ¿los pacientes tienen dolor?, ¿se está sólo enmascarando el dolor?, y ¿por qué complicarse cuando se tienen diversos opioides a la mano?»
