La terapia transfusional ha evolucionado a grandes pasos para beneficio de los pacientes. Durante la primera mitad del siglo XX las principales complicaciones eran de origen inmunológico: las reacciones hemolíticas graves por incompatibilidad de grupo o Rh se presentaban hasta en 1 de cada 500 transfusiones. Después fueron las complicaciones infecciosas las que amenazaban la vida de los receptores.
