El trauma sigue siendo una causa importante de morbilidad y mortalidad en el mundo, representando más del 10% de las muertes, la mayoría directa o indirectamente a hemorragia. Durante la última década, el manejo de la hemorragia grave en pacientes traumatizados ha cambiado radicalmente, esto se debe principalmente al reconocimiento de muchos pacientes que al llegar al Servicio de Urgencias tienen una coagulopatía establecida sin haber aún recibido una terapia de reposición hídrica, negando la antigua creencia que la hemodilución iatrogénica es el principal desencadenante de dicha coagulopatía.
