Síndrome metabólico en artritis reumatoide

RESUMEN
El síndrome metabólico (SM) es un conjunto de factores de riesgo para enfermedades cardiovasculares; sus principales componentes son hipertrigliceridemia, hipertensión, niveles disminuidos de colesterol HDL, obesidad central y resistencia a la insulina. La prevalencia del SM en población general en México es del 41.6%. En pacientes con artritis reumatoide (AR), la prevalencia de SM varía del 16.2 al 40.9%. En los últimos 20 años, la expectativa de vida en pacientes con AR se ha reducido de 3 a 10 años en comparación con la población sana. Su relación con la prevalencia de SM aún no ha sido aclarada totalmente. Se ha sugerido una asociación entre la inflamación característica de la AR y el proceso de desarrollo del SM, al igual que una alta incidencia de SM en pacientes con la patología.
