La práctica de la anestesia es fundamental para la realización de la cirugía; sin embargo, no está exenta de problemas. Es difícil determinar con exactitud la incidencia de muertes atribuidas directamente a la anestesia, debido a que la etiología es multifactorial y, además, hay carencia de estudios con buen nivel de evidencia científica que ayuden a establecer una relación causa-efecto sólida entre la anestesia y sus complicaciones; algunos estudios reportan una incidencia tan alta de 1:10,000 y tan baja como 1:185,086 procedimientos quirúrgicos.
