La práctica médica actual, en todas las culturas y sociedades, enfrenta retos sin precedentes, como las crecientes disparidades entre las legítimas necesidades de los pacientes y los recursos disponibles en el Sistema Nacional de Salud para cumplir con esas demandas. Todo ello ejerce una presión sobre el médico para que los intereses de su paciente no siempre sean la prioridad. Por ello es imprescindible rescatar el profesionalismo en el ejercicio de la medicina para reestablecer el equilibrio necesario entre los diferentes actores del proceso: pacientes, médicos, sociedad e instituciones de salud.
