RESUMEN
Dormir, es un proceso biológico básico que influye sobre todas
las funciones del cuerpo e interactúa de manera bidireccional
con todos los aparatos y sistemas del organismo, de tal forma
que los trastornos del sueño se asocian con alteraciones respiratorias,
neurológicas, cardiovasculares, endocrinas, inmunológicas,
etc., y viceversa. La complejidad de los mecanismos
reguladores del sueño y la variedad de sus trastornos, conjuntamente
con las evidencias clínicas acumuladas en las últimas
décadas, han dado lugar al nacimiento de una rama nueva de
la medicina: la Medicina del Dormir, con trastornos intrínsecos
bien definidos. La privación o fragmentación del sueño inducidas
por los cambios en la dinámica social y laboral, o la
presencia de trastornos intrínsecos del sueño, producen efectos
nocivos a corto y largo plazo en individuos de todas las
edades; los más importantes son el alto riesgo de sufrir accidentes
vehiculares y laborales, además de presentar daño cardiovascular,
deterioro cognitivo, obesidad y diabetes mellitus,
entre otros. Las clínicas y laboratorios de sueño en México
han hecho contribuciones importantes en el ámbitos básico y
clínico, para el diagnóstico y tratamiento de trastornos del
sueño; no obstante, sin una política de salud específica se se-
tratamienguirán
destinando recursos sólo a la atención a sus efectos y
no a la prevención, lo cual hará que las repercusiones sobre la
economía y calidad de vida de los pacientes con trastornos del
sueño sean mucho mayores que en los países desarrollados.
Es necesario construir un programa de atención que incorpore
la Medicina del Dormir en las prioridades de atención médica
de las instituciones nacionales de salud a todos los niveles.
Se ofrecen soluciones y guías para optimizar el logro de metas
propuestas y para aumentar la eficiencia y efectividad de los
recursos aplicados en este nuevo campo de la medicina.
