El paciente crítico y la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos

RESUMEN
La Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos (UCI) es un servicio de alta especialidad en donde se trata a los pacientes críticamente
enfermos. El paciente crítico es aquel que presenta un padecimiento agudo potencialmente reversible que pone en riesgo su
vida, por lo que requiere de un estrecho monitoreo y supervisión por la grave disfunción orgánica que presenta. Dada la
condición de este paciente, demanda una visión integral distinta al resto de pacientes en un hospital, ya que su sola
condición representa un reto para el médico y es un predisponente para la aparición de entidades específicas propias, tales
como polineuropatía del paciente crítico y la hiperglucemia por estrés, entre otras. Estas entidades obedecen a una
interacción compleja de factores que se presentan en el organismo durante los estados agudos de estrés. La identificación
oportuna y tratamiento de estos padecimientos permite mejorar el pronóstico para el paciente y disminuir su mortalidad.
