Actualidades en la fisiopatología del síndrome de intestino irritable: el papel de las infecciones

RESUMEN
Aunque se desconoce la causa del síndrome de intestino irritable, en la actualidad se cree que esta enfermedad se origina por múltiples
causas entre las que participan varios agentes que interactúan produciendo alteraciones sensitivas y motoras dentro del sistema nervioso
entérico. Las infecciones, los trastornos emocionales y la dieta son algunos de los factores que más se han relacionado con estas alteraciones.
La probabilidad de que las alteraciones en la flora entérica o microbiota puedan jugar un papel en la patogénesis del síndrome de
intestino irritable ha comenzado a atraer la atención científica, a raíz de la descripción del síndrome de intestino irritable posinfeccioso, el
papel del sobrecrecimiento bacteriano y la prescripción de antibióticos y probióticos en el tratamiento del síndrome de intestino irritable.
En esta revisión se analiza la información más relevante acerca de los aspectos más novedosos de la fisiopatología del síndrome de
intestino irritable y su relación con las infecciones.
