Introducción
El trauma torácico penetrante se describió desde 5,000 a.C. en el papiro de Edwin Smith. En la antigüedad, se conocía la posición de los pulmones en el tórax y su susceptibilidad a las lesiones penetrantes, siendo prueba de ello la descripción de la muerte de Sarpedón, mientras que Galeno reportó lesiones pulmonares entre los gladiadores. En los conflictos mundiales y Guerras de Corea y Vietnam, se observó que el drenaje torácico resolvía › 80% de los traumatismos torácicos militares, mientras que el resto de los casos requerían manejo con técnicas que iban desde la sutura simple hasta la resección anatómica, incluyéndose maniobras complejas de control hiliar central.
