RESUMEN

La fuerza de mordida (FM) es un indicador del estado funcional del sistema masticatorio. El propósito de este trabajo fue exponer información disponible y útil para la práctica odontológica acerca de la FM. Se trata de enfatizar que su evaluación directa depende de un gran número de factores para lo que se muestran acuerdos y controversias actuales contenidas en la literatura científica.
En esta primera parte se analiza la importancia de la FM en la eficiencia masticatoria y ante la consistencia de la dieta, los dispositivos y técnicas de medición utilizados que pueden afectar su registro, su relación con la edad y el crecimiento y desarrollo, así como con el sexo.
