La sepsis y el choque séptico representan una de las principales causas de ingreso a las Unidades de Cuidados Intensivos. Se estima que cada año, aproximadamente 500,000 pacientes desarrollarán sepsis y/o choque séptico. De éstos, sólo sobrevivirán de un 55 a 65% y, del total de pacientes con sepsis, el 45% requerirá un procedimiento quirúrgico donde se necesitará la intervención de un anestesiólogo.
