RESUMEN
La aterosclerosis carotídea es responsable de alrededor de 25 % de los eventos vasculares cerebrales isquémicos. Para decidir el manejo adecuado es importante conocer los aspectos básicos de la fisiopatología de la placa y cuál es su repercusión clínica. La tecnología actual ofrece una gama amplia de estudios de gabinete que permiten visualizar y analizar las características de la placa. El correcto conocimiento de la fisiopatología, así como la comprensión de los estudios de imagen disponibles en la actualidad son fundamentales para la planificación terapéutica.
