La pandemia de obesidad y diabetes que existe en la actualidad en los países
desarrollados y que cada vez se incrementa más en los países en vías de desarrollo,
no tiene, por ahora, posibilidad de detenerse, y sobre la base de definiciones
actuales, millones de personas en Estados Unidos tienen prediabetes, y algunos ya
están afectados por alteraciones microvasculares. La prediabetes aumenta en 5 a 6
veces el riesgo absoluto de diabetes tipo 2, y puede ser aún mayor en ciertos
grupos poblacionales.
