RESUMEN

La cirugía oncológica continúa siendo una parte fundamental en el manejo multidisciplinario de los pacientes con cáncer, a pesar de los avances actuales que se tienen en el campo de la radioterapia, quimioterapia, terapias sistémicas, incluyendo las terapias dirigidas a blancos moleculares. Su papel incide en varios momentos durante el manejo de un paciente oncológico como: prevención, diagnóstico, evaluación de la extensión de la enfermedad, tratamiento curativo, manejo de las secuelas, complicaciones por el tratamiento y, no menos importante, paliación.
El estado actual de la cirugía oncológica, producto de una constante evolución, impulsada por manos hábiles con mentes creativas e incansables, ha logrado marcar la historia de la medicina en un área que actualmente tiene gran trascendencia y con un crecimiento acelerado en un corto periodo de tiempo. Bajo este argumento nosotros hemos decidido presentar un panorama general actualizado del papel de la cirugía oncológica, desde su evolución a través de la historia hasta mostrar toda su aplicación en las distintas áreas del campo oncológico.
