Blastocystis hominis actualmente: ¿controversia o realidad?

RESUMEN
El presente artículo esboza, de manera sinóptica, una aproximación a la biología del complejo microorganismo
Blastocystis hominis. Aún cuando fue descrito a principios del siglo XX, muchos aspectos referentes al ciclo de vida y la fisiología de este protozoario permanece en estudio. Su distribución cosmopolita, y asociación con organismos tanto comensales como patógenos, dificultan comprender con claridad su biología, fisiología y epidemiología. Actualmente, se ha logrado establecer una aproximación a su ciclo de vida; enfatizando la forma evolutiva infectante, forma de dispersión y forma responsable de la enfermedad. Se continúa investigando su relación con cambios a nivel nutricional, específicamente en niños. Está aún por definirse si la blastocistosis es una enfermedad o no, y que al igual que el resto de las parasitosis intestinales, se pudiese vincular con ambientes insalubres, poco saneamiento e higiene precaria, entre otros.
