A pesar del avance tecnológico y mayor conocimiento sobre los efectos adversos del dolor en el postoperatorio, continúa más de un tercio de los pacientes operados sufriendo dolor inútil. Este mismo dolor condiciona a los que lo padecen de molestias, pobre satisfacción, admisiones recurrentes y dolor crónico postquirúrgico resultado de la submedicación y falla en su manejo.
