Enfermedad por la infiltración de sustancias modelantes con fines estético

RESUMEN
El deseo de cumplir con ciertos patrones de belleza ha propiciado la infiltración de sustancias con fines modelantes. Se describen los síntomas y la patología relacionados con la infiltración de sustancias modelantes en una serie de casos consecutivos atendidos en forma multidisciplinaria en el Hospital General de México, de enero de 1999 a octubre de 2009. Se incluyeron 279 pacientes: 234 mujeres y 45 hombres, de 21 a 81 años de edad, quienes se infiltraron aceite mineral, guayacol, silicón, aceite vegetal, aceite de automóvil, grasa bovina, y vitaminas. La cantidad infiltrada de estas sustancias fue de 10 mL a 10 litros. Los sitios infiltrados fueron: glúteos, mamas, piernas, muslos, caderas, cara y otros. La aparición de sintomatología se observó desde el primer mes hasta 18 años después de la infiltración de las sustancias. Las manifestaciones locales fueron hiperemia, dolor, nódulos, engrosamiento de la piel y de tejido subcutáneo, hiperpigmentación, neoformaciones venosas, migración de la sustancia infiltrada y otras. Los síntomas sistémicos fueron fiebre, artralgias y mialgias, entre otros. El 14.2% desarrolló enfermedades del tejido conectivo. Aunque su verdadera prevalencia e incidencia son desconocidas, representa actualmente un serio problema de salud pública en países como México.
