El jugo de arándano y su papel en las infecciones de las vías urinarias

RESUMEN
Las infecciones de las vías urinarias son un problema de salud mundial, con una proporción de 9 a 1 en la mujer respecto del hombre. En 90% de los casos la bacteria que la origina es
Escherichia coli. Durante la vida reproductiva, esta infección es motivo de gran cantidad de incapacidades laborales, de ahí la necesidad de insistir en su profilaxis. El jugo de arándano rojo es una opción para prevenir la infección de vías urinarias, cualidad demostrada en diferentes publicaciones recientes, en las que se destaca que su mecanismo de acción radica en el efecto que ejercen las proantocianidinas, especialmente las de tipo A, en el urotelio, que evitan que
Escherichia coli se adhiera a éste; es así como ejerce su acción antibacteriana, que se consigue con la ingestión de, por lo menos, 300 mL de jugo al día.
