RESUMEN
La inmunoterapia de alergenos se ha practicado satisfactoriamente por alergólogos desde hace varias décadas. Esta técnica fue introducida por Leonard Noon en 1911. Él propuso que los pacientes que padecían de fiebre del heno eran sensibles a una “toxina” del polen de pasto y que podían ser beneficiados induciendo inmunidad activa a esta “toxina” por inoculaciones de un extracto de polen de pasto. La efectividad clínica en dosis adecuadas tanto en rinitis alérgica como en asma, se ha confirmado en varios trabajos. Los estudios recientes han mostrado una gran respuesta inmune anti-inflamatoria y han confirmado un efecto benéfico persistente después de un esquema adecuado de inmunoterapia.
