Se realizan de 4 a 5 millones de operaciones abdominales vía laparotomía cada año en los Estados Unidos de América. En óptimas condiciones se presenta hernia incisional en más del 18% de pacientes sometidos a cirugía abdominal, lo cual se traduce en 450,000 hernias por año.
