El término timoma se refiere a una neoplasia poco común derivada de las células epiteliales del timo, que representa alrededor del 30% de las masas de mediastino anterior en adultos.
Las neoplasias epiteliales de timo se presentan en casi todas las edades (rango de 7 a 89 años), presentando un pico de incidencia entre los 55 y 65 años de edad. Son responsables de menos del 1% de los cánceres en el adulto, con una incidencia de 1 a 5 casos por millón de habitantes al año. Sin embargo, representan un problema clínico en el sentido de la sospecha, la evaluación diagnóstica y las decisiones terapéuticas.
