RESUMEN

Este artículo es una revisión de los orígenes de los materiales protésicos utilizados en la hernioplastia inguinal, sobre su evolución y las clasificaciones actuales, sobre las características de las mallas sintéticas disponibles en el mercado y un análisis de las causas de recurrencia, de seroma y de su uso en infección establecida.
