Uno de los objetivos principales de la transfusión sanguínea es mantener una adecuada oxigenación de los tejidos del receptor para aumentar su sobrevida ante un evento patológico determinado. Así, la transfusión sanguínea (también llamada transfusión de paquete globular o de eritrocitos) es un recurso terapéutico muy usado en personas que padecen algún tipo de anemia (leucemia, por ejemplo), en cirugías mayores (cardiaca y de grandes vasos), en niños prematuros, etc.
