Atención preventiva de la salud bucal en el preescolar

RESUMEN
La principal afección bucal en los infantes es la caries, derivada, por un lado, de una higiene deficiente y, por otro, de una mala nutrición basada en una ingesta frecuente de azúcare y otros carbohidratos. Proceso que desmineraliza paulatinamete el esmalte y la dentina, producido por un desbalance entre los fluidos de la biopelícula. Además, factores como el nivel socioeconómico y educativo de los padres potencia la posibilidad de desarrollar caries en el seno familiar. Para su tratamiento es indispensable una evaluación clínica temprana y un diagnóstico oporturno, así como instruir a los padres sobre algunas medidas (higiene bucal, dieta, etc.) para disminuir la presencia de caries en el entorno familiar. Aspectos que se revisan en este documento para enfatizar la importancia de realizar programas de prevención y atención que sean efectivos en relación al costo-beneficio.
