Trastorno bipolar en los niños: hechos actuales

RESUMEN

Se hizo una búsqueda de información sobre el trastorno bipolar en niños en las bases de datos: PubMed, EbscoHost y OvidSP, usando como palabras clave: trastorno bipolar, niños, adolescentes, inicio temprano. Se dio prioridad a los reportes que de acuerdo entre los autores de este trabajo, fueran de mayor interés clínico, que hubiesen seguido una estricta metodología en su investigación y que se hubiesen publicado en los últimos 10 años. Se incluyeron algunas publicaciones con más de 10 años, cuando éstas eran relevantes. Se documentó que el TB en niños es cada vez más reconocido: cuando se hace un cuidadoso estudio clínico con instrumentos de diagnóstico “clinimétricos”. Los resultados en estudios imagenológicos han documentado alteraciones que pudieran estar involucradas en la fisiopatología de este trastorno, pero son necesarios más estudios. Es importante reconocer el traslape de manifestaciones clínicas entre el TB y el trastorno por déficit de atención e hiperactividad (TDAH); además es necesario considerar en el diagnóstico la presencia de otros trastornos asociados.
