La frecuencia de las cardiopatías congénitas está comprendida entre 0,6 y 0,8%. Han sido descritas muchas anomalías, pero una decena de ellas resumen por sí solas el 90% de las cardiopatías que necesitan una intervención quirúrgica durante el primer año de vida. El progreso ha sido enorme en los últimos cincuenta años, desde que Robert Gross efectuara con éxito en 1938, la ligadura de un canal arterial en una niña de 7 años, que fue seguida poco después por otras intervenciones extracardíacas, como la creación de un shunt paliativo (anastomosis de Blalock-Taussig), para la tetralogía de Fallot.8 La introducción de la circulación extracorpórea (CEC) y luego de las técnicas de hipotermia profunda por parte de equipos japoneses y de la hipotermia de superficie combinada a la CEC,5 despejó el terreno que llevaría a la corrección quirúrgica de la mayoría de las malformaciones cardíacas del recién nacido y del lactante.
