Demencias valoradas con tomografía por emisión de positrones y 18F-fluordesoxiglucosa

RESUMEN
Introducción: La PET-FDG es la técnica reina de la medicina nuclear, con la cual obtenemos mapas numéricos de la actividad metabólica del cerebro humano
“in vivo”. Comentaremos las aplicaciones clínicas de la fluordesoxiglucosa.
Objetivo: Exponer a los médicos relacionados con la neurología las aplicaciones clínicas de un estudio metabólico con un análogo de la glucosa en distintos tipos de demencias.
Técnica: El paciente amerita de 4-6 horas de ayuno y abstenerse de tomar café, té, alcohol, no fumar y con glucemia normal. La
18F-FDG, tiene una vida media de 110 minutos y se administra por vía intravenosa a razón de 1.0 - 2.5 MBq/kg. Al cabo de 30-60 minutos se adquieren las imágenes. Con cámaras de última generación y modo 3D, la adquisición suele durar 20 minutos.
Conclusiones: Incluyendo esta nueva tecnología ya disponible en nuestro país en el algoritmo diagnóstico de las enfermedades del sistema nervioso central, se puede modificar el panorama diagnóstico de las enfermedades mentales en etapas más tempranas, pudiendo administrar con mayor certeza y precozmente un tratamiento específico, mejorando el pronóstico, la calidad de vida, la actividad laboral y la relación social y familiar de los enfermos, reduciendo costos e incapacidades.
