RESUMEN
La adaptación de lentes de contacto es una práctica oftalmológica frecuente para la corrección de ametropías. Existen millones de usuarios de lentes de contacto, por lo que el conocimiento de la interacción de éstos con la superficie ocular es básico para el buen funcionamiento visual.
Se conocen muchos beneficios en la utilización de los lentes de contacto aunque su uso no está exento de riesgos y complicaciones, habiendo diversos elementos fisiopatológicos en el segmento anterior, siendo la mayoría de las complicaciones el resultado de hipoxia corneal, efectos mecánicos en la superficie ocular, procesos infecciosos o factores inmunológicos o tóxicos que determinan edema, conjuntivitis papilar gigante, vascularizacion corneal, microquistes epiteliales, fenómenos de hipersensibilidad y polimegatismo endotelial, queratitis ulcerativa o úlceras por acantamoeba, complicaciones que son expuestas en el presente trabajo.
