La pancreatitis aguda continúa siendo una enfermedad caracterizada por una morbilidad y mortalidad significativa, con diversos reportes que señalan un incremento anual de la incidencia de la enfermedad. Artículos de posición sobre la práctica clínica, como éste, están diseñados para educar y guiar a los médicos en la toma de decisiones de atención de pacientes. Estos lineamientos intentan resumir la mejor información disponible y describir la mejor práctica clínica. Es conveniente referir que este abordaje es algo limitado en el área de pancreatitis aguda, debido a la falta de ensayos grandes aleatorizados controlados. Lineamientos como éste, en ausencia de este tipo de evidencia científica de apoyo, debe incluir una buena cantidad de recomendaciones basadas en evidencia menos sólida, incluyendo la opinión de los expertos. Es ciertamente posible que futuros ensayos aleatorizados grandes puedan dar lugar a cambios en los lineamientos similares a éste que están por escribirse. La pancreatitis aguda es una enfermedad de tal variabilidad que no puede ser manejada de manera efectiva siguiendo ciegamente cualquier conjunto de recomendaciones, y estos lineamientos no tienen la intención de ser equivalentes al estándar legal de manejo. En vez de ello, se espera que este artículo de posición pueda combinar los estudios científicos disponibles y la base de evidencia (o la falta de ella) con opinión experta para formar una herramienta útil para los clínicos.
