La enfermedad tromboembólica venosa (ETV), representa un grave problema de salud pública en todo el mundo, con una incidencia de 250,000 a 2,000,000 casos por año en EUA.
La predisposición depende de factores adquiridos o hereditarios. Muchos de los factores adquiridos pueden modificarse y disminuir considerablemente la incidencia de trombosis venosa profunda (TVP) o embolia pulmonar (EP).
