Introducción
La necesidad de criar corderos artificialmente surge en todo el mundo, como respuesta a varios requerimientos: Cuando el aporte de leche es insuficiente debido al número elevado de corderos nacidos (debido a la mayor difusión de razas prolíficas); cuando se desea incrementar la frecuencia de parición; cuando existen requerimientos especiales de criar animales libres de enfermedades (en particular de parasitosis), o cuando la leche de oveja es un producto comercializable. Con respecto a este último punto, el ordeño de ovejas es una práctica muy difundida en la cuenca del Mediterráneo, y en el Medio Oriente, donde existe una gran tradición en la elaboración y el consumo de quesos y yogures. En los últimos años ha existido un creciente interés por este sistema de explotación en los países del sur de América Latina. Este es el caso particular de Uruguay, donde en 1987, surgió la explotación ovina lechera como un nuevo rubro agroindustrial para productores que buscaban una alternativa diferente a la explotación lanera. La falta de experiencia en todo el país, requirió encarar estudios fundamentalmente relacionados con aspectos productivos y comerciales, su difusión y sobre todo crear las condiciones para la adopción de esta explotación.
