En el paciente con EPOC que tiene limitaciones físicas importantes en relación con su enfermedad, la propuesta de un tratamiento quirúrgico (Bulectomía, reducción de volumen pulmonar o trasplante) puede ser una gran esperanza. De ahí, que debe evaluarse la factibilidad de estos procedimientos antes de sugerirlos. Estos procedimientos significan también riesgos importantes para el paciente, al punto que podría significar la diferencia entre tener una mejor calidad de vida o morir en el intento. Por ello este tipo de intervenciones deben analizarse con el paciente y discutirse también con los familiares para determinar y evaluar los riesgos y beneficios.
