El gran mundo de los RNAs pequeños

RESUMEN
En la última década se han descubierto en muchos organismos una gran cantidad de RNAs cuya función es la de servir como elementos regulatorios de la expresión genética y no codifican para una proteína. A estos RNAs se les denomina ncRNAs o sRNAs (
non coding o small RNAs, RNAs no codificantes o pequeños, por sus siglas en inglés). De los más de 70 sRNAs que se han documentado en
Escherichia coli, algunos regulan la traducción o estabilidad de los mRNAs, otros poseen actividades catalíticas y unos más modifican la actividad de una proteína. En esta revisión se discutirán los mecanismos de acción de algunos de ellos, así como los esfuerzos para encontrar nuevos sRNAs por medio de búsquedas sistemáticas.
