La humanidad atraviesa la
pandemia del nuevo beta coronavirus
causante de síndrome de distrés
respiratorio agudo (SDRA), el
SARS-CoV-2. Este virus, revelado
en diciembre de 2019, en Wuhan,
China, ha sido encontrado en
Guayas, Ecuador, en febrero de
2020, donde 12.489 fallecimientos
ocurrieron entre el 12 de marzo
y el 22 de abril de 2020, cifras
visiblemente superiores a las 2.345
y 2.616 reportadas en el año 2018 y
2019, respectivamente. Durante la
pandemia el exceso de muertes por
encima del promedio fue en Guayas
430%, mientras que en Bérgamo,
Italia, 496%; Nueva York, Estados
Unidos 386%; Madrid, España,
212% y Manaos, Brasil, 160%.
