Introducción
La Medicina Familiar es esencial para un sistema de atención a la salud exitoso, pues, entre muchas otras cosas, constituye una forma de prestar servicios de atención primaria. Las fortalezas más importantes de este tipo de atención se derivan de su ubicación cercana al paciente, una amplia perspectiva, y el carácter disciplinario, así como la flexibilidad y adaptabilidad de sus métodos. Ante las dominantes inequidades e irregularidades de calidad en el sistema mexicano de salud y al analizar los avances obtenidos a través del Proceso de Mejora de la Medicina Familiar, es evidente que debemos preservar y fortalecer no sólo la seguridad social, sino, particularmente, la medicina familiar dentro del esquema de servicios de salud de la seguridad social. Los costos económicos y sociales de las principales complicaciones de las enfermedades crónicas están a la alza. La cardiopatía isquémica, la insuficiencia cardiaca, la enfermedad renal terminal, las enfermedades cerebrovasculares y el cáncer, entre otras, representan una tremenda carga para las finanzas en un sistema de atención médica "centrado en hospitales".
