El género Aeromonas. ¿Un patógeno importante en México?

RESUMEN
El género
Aeromonas se ha reconocido desde 1891 como agente etiológico de enfermedades de varias especies de peces y ocasionalmente de mamíferos, reptiles, anfibios y pájaros. Recientemente algunas de las especies han emergido como un problema de salud pública para la población humana provocando infecciones intestinales y extra-intestinales que incluyen bacteriemia. Tomando en consideración que en algunos países estos microorganismos se encuentran entre las principales causas de diarrea, es oportuno dar a conocer la importancia de estos microorganismos y referenciar los estudios realizados en México. Los mecanismos de patogenicidad en las infecciones causadas por especies de este género no se han establecido con exactitud, sin embargo, se han identificado un gran número de estructuras y enzimas extracelulares considerados factores de virulencia de
Aeromonas. Esta revisión ofrece un panorama de las principales características de este género, así como de los avances que se han producido en el conocimiento de estos microorganismos. La incidencia de infecciones producidas por cepas de este género está probablemente subestimada en México, ya que estos microorganismos sólo se investigan de forma rutinaria en algunos laboratorios clínicos, por lo que nuestro grupo de trabajo recomienda a todos los laboratorios que realicen las pruebas necesarias para aislar e identificar estos microorganismos para así poder establecer la importancia de
Aeromonas como patógeno humano en nuestro país.
