Mensaje
El asma es un problema de salud de gran importancia a nivel mundial. En algunos países, como Nueva Zelanda, su prevalencia llega a superar el 25%. En México no tenemos datos confiables acerca de su frecuencia en la población, pero sabemos que alrededor del 8% de los niños presentan este padecimiento.
Desgraciadamente, el diagnóstico y manejo del asma son heterogéneos y en muchos casos inadecuados, con la consiguiente disminución en la calidad de vida y aumento en el costo económico, el sufrimiento, y la mortalidad.
Ante la gravedad del problema, en diferentes países y Asociaciones se han formado grupos de trabajo para la elaboración de Consensos basados en la evidencia actual, que sirvan como guía para el diagnóstico y manejo. Ejemplo de estos Consensos son las Guías del Reino Unido, Canadá, Estados Unidos de América, la Unión Internacional Contra la Tuberculosis y las Enfermedades Respiratorias (UICTER) y las de la Iniciativa Global para el Asma (GINA).
