La ecocardiografía es sin dudas uno de los principales avances en el campo de la cardiología, al permitir evaluar en tiempo real elementos de la anatomía y funcionamiento del corazón. Sus potencialidades permiten que su uso se extravase a otras especialidades, pues constituye una herramienta de imagen no invasiva valiosa para la evaluación diagnóstica, monitorización hemodinámica y guía de intervenciones en pacientes que, por ejemplo, requieren cuidados intensivos.
En los últimos años las Unidades de Cuidados Intensivos (UCI) han incorporado la ecocardiografía como un sistema de monitorización y detección de enfermedades potencialmente graves, donde la ecocardiografía junto al paciente posee un gran impacto en la práctica de la medicina intensiva. Si bien es imposible cuantificar por completo este impacto, se puede apreciar un aumento en el número de organismos médicos internacionales que exigen competencia en ecocardiografía de cuidados intensivos (ECC).
