Las lectinas como herramientas en biomedicina

RESUMEN
Las lectinas son proteínas o glicoproteínas que reconocen de manera específica
carbohidratos de la superficie celular o en suspensión, aglutinan células y precipitan
glicoconjugados. Las lectinas no poseen actividad enzimática y presentan actividades
biológicas, diversas como son: la aglutinación de eritrocitos de diferentes
especies, la estimulación mitogénica de linfocitos e inhibición de la fagocitosis. Las
lectinas aisladas de diversas fuentes vegetales o animales, han demostrado ser
herramientas útiles en la investigación biomédica, en donde se les utiliza para la
tipificación de grupos sanguíneos, aislamientos de poblaciones, caracterización de
nuevos antígenos.
