RESUMEN
El virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana (VIH) se ha diseminado a todas las naciones infectando a más de 2.5 millones de personas en todo el mundo. En México se han reportado 71,526 casos de SIDA y se ha estimado que alrededor de 116,000 a 177,000 personas están infectados por el VIH en el grupo de edad entre 15-49 años. En este grupo ocupa la 4ª causa de mortalidad. Aproximadamente 4-5% de los pacientes con VIH son admitidos a la unidad de cuidados intensivos. Implementando diagnósticos adecuados, así como estrategias terapéuticas y profilácticas estos pacientes pueden sobrevivir más. Sin duda alguna, los médicos intensivistas tienen un importante papel estableciendo las medidas de apoyo a los pacientes con VIH para sobrevivir a la crisis aguda, permitiendo así continuar con su vida productiva activa.
