RESUMEN
Tanto la cantidad y la calidad del sueño se modifican por las variadas condiciones de estrés sufridas durante la vigilia. Las alteraciones del sueño como consecuencia del estrés se pueden ver desde una perspectiva bidireccional, ya que las alteraciones del sueño producen estrés y, a su vez, el estrés genera cambios en el ciclo sueño-vigilia. La privación de sueño en el ser humano genera estrés, lentitud de pensamiento, dificultad para lograr concentración y percepción precisa, fatiga e irritabilidad, nerviosismo, mal talante. Experimentalmente, en la rata, la privación de sueño produce cambios en la actividad EEG cerebral con decremento en la correlación interhemisférica en todas las derivaciones y en todas las bandas, excepto en las regiones temporales. Por otro lado, el efecto nocivo del estrés se produce cuando los sucesos de la vida, ya sean de orden físico o psíquico, superan nuestra capacidad para afrontarlos. La asociación de privación del sueño paradójico (SP) y estrés, en la rata, disminuye la correlación interparietal, en la que posiblemente están involucrados los niveles de alertamiento hipocámpico, cuando la combinación del estrés y la privación de SP afectan el acoplamiento interhemisférico. Son varias las funciones del sueño que todavía no son dilucidadas, se puede considerar que la cantidad y la calidad adecuada del sueño son importantes para la salud y el bienestar del ser humano.
